About the CISER Data Archive
The data archive maintains a collection of social and economic datasets, about 27,000 online files and thousands of studies on CD-ROMs and DVDs. It's a centralized source for numeric data files: their acquisition, storage, maintenance, and use. We support the research activities of social science faculty, students, and staff at Cornell University.
The collection includes federal or state censuses, files based on administrative records, public opinion surveys, economic and social data from national and international organizations, and studies compiled by individual researchers. You can search our holdings or browse studies by subject area. Also see Locating and Using Archive Data.
Members of the Cornell community have access to our studies from:
CISER research computing servers. Our computing environment lets researchers work with large files, use many statistical software packages, and transfer files or their subsets to other machines. Information about getting an account and assistance with statistical software is linked from the CISER computing page.
Online catalog download. Current Cornell faculty, staff, and students can download most archive files from links in our online catalog. Our download page has more information on this service.
Most studies have machine-readable documentation: codebooks, file layout maps, technical notes, questionnaires, reports, and errata. Many are also supported, at least in part, by printed materials. These are located in the CISER building and intended for on-site use, although they can be borrowed for short periods. You should also review the policies that govern use of the data files and documentation.
Archive staff can work with you to identify data in our collection and help you find and obtain data held elsewhere. CISER is a member of the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) and the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research, both major distributors of social science data. The CISER Data Archive also participates in Cornell's Research Data Management Service Group (RDMSG).
