CISER Data Archive: Tutorial

What is the Data Archive?

The data archive is a collection of numeric files and supporting documentation that are used for secondary analysis.  Our primary mission is to meet the research needs of Cornell University social science faculty, research associates, and  students.  The Archive is part of the Cornell Institute for Social and Economic Research, located on the second floor of 391 Pine Tree Road.

The archive acquires, processes, and stores datasets. With other CISER units, it also supports data maintenance and delivery services to users.  The collection consists of about 27,000 online files representing over 2,000 studies, plus thousands of studies on CD-ROMs and DVDs.  The collection is particularly strong in the following areas:

  • demography
  • economics
  • education
  • health
  • international affairs
  • labor and employment
  • life studies and aging
  • political behavior
  • societal attitudes and behavior

In cooperation with the New York Statistical Information System (NYsis), much of the collection focuses on the people, economy, and government of New York State.   The aata archive is also affiliated with the Cornell University Library, and the archivist works with staff at other libraries to obtain and provide access to numeric data.   CISER represents the Cornell community through membership in the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) and the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research.
